Aaron Swartz: A Patriot’s Tribute

Swartz had been facing federal prosecution under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act for downloading millions of academic articles from JSTOR through MIT’s network — articles funded largely by taxpayers but locked behind corporate paywalls. Facing up to 35 years in prison and over a million dollars in fines, the pressure of the federal case contributed to his death, according to his family. Max covered the immediate aftermath: Anonymous hackers breached MIT websites on January 13, replacing pages with tributes to Swartz and calls to action for the open access movement. The U.S. Sentencing Commission website was also later hacked in his name. Max framed Swartz as a true patriot who believed information should be free and who was destroyed by a prosecutorial system designed to crush dissent rather than serve justice.
Kentucky Sheriff: No Gun Grabbing in My County
The show spotlighted Jackson County, Kentucky Sheriff Denny Peyman, who held a press conference declaring that his office would not comply with any federal gun control actions that violated the U.S. Constitution or the Kentucky Constitution. Peyman stated plainly that he had sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution and that no executive order or federal legislation would override that oath within his jurisdiction. DARPA’s Sunken Sea Drones and Minority Report Surveillance
Max covered two alarming developments in military and surveillance technology. First, DARPA had announced its Upward Falling Payloads program in January 2013 — a plan to deploy unmanned systems in sealed containers on the deep ocean floor, where they would remain dormant for years before being remotely activated and launched to the surface on command. The pods would carry small UAVs and networking hardware, taking advantage of what DARPA called cheap stealth provided by deep-water concealment. Max noted the program represented a new frontier in persistent military presence, with drone systems hidden across the world’s oceans waiting to be awakened.
