The American template mass shooting. Charles Whitman, a 25-year-old former Marine and UT Austin engineering student, killed his wife and mother the night before, then climbed the UT Main Building tower with a rifle and proceeded to kill 14 more people over a 96-minute interval before being killed by police. The shooting predates the modern public-safety category of "active shooter" and produced the first SWAT-team formations. Whitman left a note before the attacks specifically requesting an autopsy because he was concerned that something was wrong with his brain. The siege ended with the mall partially collapsed; the cause of the collapse (Kenyan Defence Forces tank rounds vs. attacker explosives) has been disputed. The KDF was subsequently documented as having engaged in extensive looting of the mall's high-end retailers during the operation. The "white widow" Samantha Lewthwaite — widow of 7/7 London bomber Germaine Lindsay — was widely speculated to have participated; the Kenyan government has variously confirmed and denied her presence.
