Greek Television Produced a Major Anonymous Documentary

In March 2012, the Greek television program War Zone aired a two-part documentary titled “Soldiers With No Name,” offering one of the first in-depth television examinations of the Anonymous hacktivist collective. The series featured a notable interview with the figure known as Commander X, conducted via Skype, providing viewers with a direct window into the motivations and operations of the decentralized movement.

Who Were the “Soldiers With No Name”?

The documentary posed the central question that had occupied governments, corporations, and media outlets worldwide: were the individuals behind the Guy Fawkes masks activists or internet rebels? Were they pranksters, common hackers, or a new breed of digital revolutionaries armed with keyboards and screens?

Anonymous had by that point launched high-profile operations against governments, corporations, and organizations across the globe, generating both admiration and alarm depending on the perspective. The group’s decentralized structure, with no formal leadership or membership, made it difficult for authorities to categorize or counter.

Commander X Spoke on the Record

The interview with Commander X, one of the more publicly visible figures associated with Anonymous, provided insight into how participants in the movement viewed their own actions. Speaking from an undisclosed location, Commander X discussed the collective’s goals, targets, and the philosophy driving their digital campaigns.

The Documentary Featured Expert Voices

Beyond the Anonymous interview, the documentary included perspectives from journalist Quinn Norton, who had covered the hacktivist movement extensively for Wired magazine, and Josh Shaul, Chief Technology Officer of Application Security, Inc., who offered a cybersecurity perspective on the group’s technical capabilities.

War Zone, an award-winning current affairs documentary series produced by journalist and war correspondent Sotiris Danezis, was known for long-form investigative features that took viewers into global hotspots. Each 60-minute episode reflected extensive journalistic research, and the series aired on Mega TV in Greece. The Anonymous episodes represented a shift from traditional conflict zones to the emerging battlefield of cyberspace.
