Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey built one of the most celebrated careers in Hollywood, known for portraying complex villains and morally ambiguous characters in films like Se7en, The Usual Suspects, and American Beauty, and later as the ruthless Frank Underwood in House of Cards. Behind the screen persona, however, a pattern of sexual misconduct allegations emerged that effectively ended his career and raised questions about accountability in the entertainment industry.

The Accusations Mount

In October 2017, actor Anthony Rapp publicly accused Spacey of making a sexual advance toward him in 1986, when Rapp was 14 years old. Spacey responded with a statement saying he did not remember the encounter but apologized for what he described as “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” In the same statement, he publicly came out as gay — a move widely criticized as an attempt to deflect from the allegation.

Rapp’s accusation opened the floodgates. More than a dozen men subsequently came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Spacey, ranging from unwanted groping to more serious assault claims. The accusers included colleagues in the entertainment industry, service workers, and others who had encountered the actor in various settings over several decades.

Criminal Charges and Legal Proceedings

In 2018, Spacey was charged with felony indecent assault and battery in Nantucket, Massachusetts, for allegedly groping an 18-year-old busboy at a restaurant in July 2016. Spacey pleaded not guilty. The case was eventually dropped after the accuser withdrew his civil lawsuit and invoked his Fifth Amendment rights regarding a missing cell phone relevant to the evidence.

In the United Kingdom, Spacey faced four counts of sexual assault against three men, related to incidents alleged to have occurred between 2005 and 2013 during his tenure as artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre in London. He was acquitted of all charges in July 2023 after a trial at Southwark Crown Court.

A federal civil trial brought by Rapp in New York concluded in October 2022 with the jury finding in Spacey’s favor, determining that Rapp had not proven his claims.

Troubling Connections and Photographs

Photographs surfaced showing Spacey in the company of figures later connected to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. One widely circulated image showed Spacey and Ghislaine Maxwell sitting together on thrones reportedly located at Buckingham Palace. Spacey was also photographed with former President Bill Clinton, with whom he reportedly traveled on Epstein’s private aircraft. The nature and extent of Spacey’s relationship with Epstein’s circle has remained a subject of public speculation.

Deaths Among Accusers

In a series of events that drew public attention, three individuals connected to allegations against Spacey died within a relatively short period:

An anonymous massage therapist who had filed a sexual assault lawsuit against Spacey in September 2018, alleging he was forced to grab the actor’s genitals during a session at a Malibu residence, died in September 2019 while the case was still active. The cause of death was not publicly disclosed.

Linda Culkin, a nursing assistant who had reportedly threatened Spacey after one of her patients disclosed an alleged assault by the actor, was struck and killed by a car while crossing a parkway in Quincy, Massachusetts in February 2019. Police determined she was crossing against the traffic signal, and no charges were filed against the driver.

Danish author Ari Behn, formerly married to Norway’s Princess Martha Louise, died by suicide on Christmas Day 2019 at age 47. In December 2017, Behn had publicly accused Spacey of groping him under a table at a Nobel Peace Prize concert in 2007. Spacey never publicly responded to the allegation.

Career Fallout

The allegations effectively ended Spacey’s career at its peak. Netflix fired him from House of Cards and scrapped a film that was already in post-production. Director Ridley Scott took the extraordinary step of reshooting all of Spacey’s scenes in the completed film All the Money in the World, replacing him with Christopher Plummer just weeks before the scheduled release.

The Spacey case became one of the defining examples of the MeToo era’s impact on the entertainment industry, illustrating both the power of collective testimony to hold prominent figures accountable and the complex, often inconclusive nature of legal proceedings in sexual misconduct cases.
